Hans

Tech lead

Full name: Hans Vanderstraeten / Home office: Leuven / part of Wieni since: 2011 / Wieni ID #5

What do you do at Wieni?

They call me "colleague with a managerial position". I supervise the technical team at Wieni.

I keep an overview of how we build large applications. In such a way that they stay fast and performant under high loads. This covers database indexes, gzipping responses, cache headers, webp for images, latency between servers, optimal use of Redis, integrations with external API's etc.

I also design architectural blueprints when we start new projects. This is about entities and the relationships between them. I do this together with the product owner on the project.

What are the most important skills needed for a Wieni techie?

A never ending passion for everything that happens online. Always trying to get the most bang for the buck. Looking beyond your specific role at Wieni. A front end developer must understand what CDN invalidations mean, a back end developer should know what a Makefile does at build, etc.

How did you improve Wieni?

I listen to everyone, pick out the interesting ideas and give them the room to come to fruition. The fact that we have our own hosting infrastructure today, the usage of Slack, our build processes inside GitLab,... each and every one of those were brought to my attention by colleagues to improve Wieni.

Why do you like to work at Wieni?

A friend once told me we don't build Volkswagen Golf cars, but every time a bespoke Rolls-Royce, fit to the client's needs. I am proud of that quote. We keep  pushing ourselves to make the best websites possible. At Wieni this is not just a sales line. It is actually true.
